Nybeth Obdilord is a non-playable character in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

A Galgastani necromancer who served the Kingdom of Galgastan. Husband to Cassandra and father of Cressida, Moldova, Oelias, and Dievold. His primary goal was to discover a means of immortality, and while he found support in Galgastan for his research, he did not seem particularly interested in matters of politics or morality.

Nybeth continually attempted to refine his methods, although he met with little success. During the Chaos route, after the deaths of Cassandra and Moldova at the hands of Denam, he attempted to revive not only his wife and daughter, but also a number of other notables, including Sir Hektor and Vyce. None of his work was an unqualified success--he complained that he could either revive the spirit or restore the body, but had not managed both for the same person. His subjects became mindless zombies; only at their moment of destruction did they regain their sanity, if only for a moment.

His remaining daughter, Cressida, would later forsake him and join Denam's forces as a result of his use of his family as subjects.

Palace of the Dead[]

Denam chases Nybeth into the Palace of the Dead and encounters him several times. After Denam delivers a mortal wound, Nybeth uses a Ring of the Dead to transform himself into a Lich and continue further into the Palace.

At the Altar of the Beyond, he encounters Denam one last time. He claims that he has discovered the purpose of the Palace, hinting perhaps at the Chaos Gate within, but loses the battle. As he falls, he claims that he is becoming immortal--"One with the Dark."

Beelzebuth claims that her thirst for knowledge is matched only by two people: Denam, and Nybeth.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

A man with an identical name and similar appearance takes up residence in the ruined Palace of the Dead, located in the Eorzean Black Shroud region, on Hydaelyn. This Nybeth claims to have been "pulled back from oblivion" to continue his work. He experimented with various necromantic arts from across Eorzea, such as the Trader's Spurn and Gridanian conjury, to uncover the secrets of immortality. He reportedly came close to succeeding in his goal with Edda Pureheart. His experiments resulted in the creation of various spectral monsters, many of whom resembled individuals who had recently died in Eorzea; these he let loose to wander the Palace and to deal with intruders. The experiments may also have caused the Palace's layout to shift and change unpredictably, and to sap the strength from anybody who attempted to navigate its twisting corridors.

Explorers from the nearby city-state of Gridania eventually discovered the entrance to the Palace in the long-abandoned subterranean city of Gelmorra. Upon discovering its unique properties, the Wood-Wailers, a Gridanian militia force, put out a call for adventurers who might be willing to explore the Palace further. One such adventurer, using specialized enchanted arms and armour to resist the chilling effects of the Palace, was able to navigate their way to Nybeth's lair, where they defeated him. Along their way, they were able to put the spirit of Edda Pureheart, who in her new incarnation had since been renamed Edda Blackbosom, to rest. In death, Nybeth Obdilord's words echoed those of his spoken by his counterpart in Tactics.
