Magnus Gallant, is the leader of the Blue Knights, and protagonist in Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. He is the son of Ankiseth Gallant, and childhood friend of Yumil Dulmare.
Story[]
Early Life[]
Magnus was the son of Ankiseth Gallant, bodyguard to the young Prince Yumil of Palatinus. Magnus and Yumil were close in age, and grew up as best friends, rather than master and servant. The brash and lively Magnus often led around the younger and meeker Yumil.
One day, Ankiseth foiled an assassination attempt on Yumil before Magnus' eyes. However, the mastermind behind the plot was Yumil's own father, King Procus, and the would-be assassin, a noble. In the fallout of the incident, Ankiseth could do nothing but silently accept the branding of a murderer. Magnus grew bitter from watching his father fall into disgrace. As an escape, he enrolled in the Ischka Military Academy in his early teens.
Palatinean Army[]
After graduation, Magnus was deployed to the Southern Division, under General Godeslas. He was earmarked for leadership potential, and put in command over the other recruits, including Diomedes Rangue and Leia Silvis. His battalion was given the name the Blue Knights.
The battlefront against the Palatinean Revolutionary Army was more morally complex than Magnus envisioned. He was frequently at odds with the brutality and hypocrisy of the military establishment. The breaking point came after Magnus captured the rebel leader Frederick Raskin, and was ordered to execute him. In a spontaneous decision, Magnus cut Frederick's bonds and escaped. To his surprise, his battalion remained loyal to his decision, and defected alongside him. The Blue Knights became a unit of the Revolutionary Army.
Revolutionary Army[]
In his battle against his former generals, Magnus also became enemy to the foreign might of the Holy Lodissian Empire. However, he made several significant contributions to the war. He liberated the enslaved Bolmoccans in the Western Region. He also gained the support of the Eastern Orthodox Church, after freeing them of Central Division's ill-gotten control.
With a heavy heart, he eventually crossed swords with his friend Yumil, when it became clear the two had conflicting visions for peace. Magnus defeated his friend, and was close to reaching an accord, when Yumil was suddenly slain. Aggrieved, Magnus vowed to take strength from Yumil's memory and wishes.
With the capital taken, the war was effectively over, but Magnus fought a final battle against Lodis' Caliginous Order, and the Netherworlders, whose power they sought. He succeeded in thwarting the resurrection of the fallen demigod Danika, which would have plunged the world into another Ogre Battle.
Later Life[]
Depending on player actions, Magnus' life after the war takes one of four directions.
- At the conclusion of the revolution, Frederick becomes the new King of Palatinus, with Magnus succeeding him upon his death. He was known as The Paladin King, for his fortitude in protecting the kingdom. He eventually bears a son, Aeneas, who takes his place on the throne.
- Though he never takes over the throne, Magnus remains one of the King's most trusted generals, and proves invaluable to Palatinus' future independence and prosperity.
- The new Kingdom of Palatinus banishes Magnus, after his bloody tactics during the revolution earned the peoples' scorn. However, Destin Faroda recognizes Magnus' potential, and invites him to join him as a mercenary against Lodis. Palatinus later falls into disarray in his absence.
- Not only is Magnus cast aside by Palatinus, but his brutality was such that even Destin and the other Zenobians also turn against him. With seemingly nowhere left to go, Magnus simply vanishes, and is eventually forgotten by history. Without him, Palatinus soon crumbles amidst war.
