Gilbald O'Brien, also known as the Skygazer, is the governor of the Charlom District in Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, a recruitable character in Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber, and a non-playable character in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. He was the best friend of Canopus Wolph and is romantically involved with Iuria Wolph.

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen[]
Early Life[]
Gilbald was childhood friends with Canopus and at some point saved Canopus' life.
For The People[]
Later he became the governor of Charlom which ran autonomously from the Xenobian Kingdom but had good relations with the Xenobian Royal Family. During the great war between Xenobia and the Empire, Gilbald surrendered unconditionally for the sake of his people. In return for his diplomacy, the Empire enforced heavy taxes and a conscription.
Shattered Bonds[]
The decision to surrender destroyed the deep friendship that he had with Canopus, who had fought bitterly against the Empire. The people of Charlom saw a quick change in their governor's personality after Gilbald had surrendered. Gilbald had gone from a kindhearted man to one cold as ice and many from then on referred to him as the dog of the Empire.
The Favor Returned[]
Gilbald let the rebels know that he held the same ideals, but he was determined to keep the peace of Charlom. The governor was defeated and at the mercy of Destin, but Canopus interceded and pleaded on Gilbald's behalf. Destin saw the wisdom in the winged's words and let Gilbald join the rebellion.
Northward[]
During the celebration at Xenobia Castle after defeating the Empire, Gilbald bid farewell to his friend Canopus and left the castle before Iuria could speak to him. He traveled north with Destin, Aisha, Debonair and Saradin to stop the invasion of the Holy Lodissian Empire.
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber[]
Hugo Report[]
Warrior who fought alongside Destin. After learning of Lodis' dominion over the kingdom, he joined the Revolutionary Army under Magnus, like his compatriots.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together[]
Gilbald briefly features in one of the epilogues to the Lord Ending. In Xenobia, he reports to King Tristan that an army of some 200 thousand Lodissian troops are set out towards Valeria.
He is also mentioned by his friend Canopus on occasion, such as when he is killed, or when he crosses swords with the Dark Knight Andoras.

Recruitment[]
Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen[]
Gilbert can be found on the Sharom District stage. To recruit:
- Recruit Canopus.
- Defeat the stage boss Gilbert.
- Answer Canopus' plea with "Yes."
Legend of Ogre Battle Gaiden: Prince of Zenobia[]
Gilbert can be unlocked by taking Yulia's Letter to Ryuk in the Netha Region. The letter can either be won as a prize in multiplayer mode, or be awarded for 10 consecutive victories in Free Battle mode.
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber[]
If Debonair, Saradin, and Aisha have been recruited, and Chaos Frame is high, Gilbert will join at the start of Chapter 4 (Scene 29).
Trivia[]
- Gilbald appears in 4 of the total 5 games in the series. Only Deneb Rove has appeared in more.
- According to a Q&A with Yasumi Matsuno, the romance between between Gilbald and Iuria was dropped from Iuria's appearance in the remake of Let Us Cling Together.
